We got called in for Group, but didn’t place—I didn’t know if it was my subpar handling skills or the fact that there were a lot more gun dogs today than there were last weekend—but in the end it didn’t matter. I had a blast, even though Blake wasn’t there. Some of the other handlers came by to chat with me and play with Miffy. Apparently she was something of a celebrity in the local dog show scene.
I decided to stick around to watch who won Best in Show. The German Shorthaired Pointer won group, so Lawrence was going in at the end of the day, and this time I found myself rooting for him. Although his serious face was super intimidating at first, it turned out he was pretty nice after all.
He ended up winning Reserve Best in Show with his dog. I was on my way to congratulate him when I stopped dead in my tracks.
There, just barely ten feet from me, was Gerrett.
It was too late to look away. He had already seen me. He was walking towards me right now.
My mind went completely blank.
“Sean,” he said as he stopped in front of me. I couldn’t read his expression. Was it relief? Disappointment? Something else entirely?
The first thing I noticed was that he looked different. His hair had grown out, long enough to brush his shoulders. His stubble was gone, cut clean completely, but his eyes were baggy and tired. He looked like half-put together mess.
“Sean,” he repeated.
“Gerrett,” I said finally.
He hesitated. For a moment I thought he was going to try and awkwardly hug me, but he didn’t.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
That seemed to kickstart his mind. His eyes cleared up and he spoke firmly now, the way I was used to hearing.
“Your boss sent me,” he said.
I was taken aback. “Clark!?”
“Yeah.” He scratched the back of his head. “He wanted me to…” He trailed off. “Keep an eye on you.”
My jaw dropped. Anger flooded through me. “What?”
Gerrett just shrugged, like it was no big deal. “Don’t get angry, Sean.”
My anger turned to blinding rage. How dare he stand there and tell me not to get angry?
“You don’t even work for Clark anymore,” I snapped. “So why is it that he sends you to fucking babysit me?”
Gerrett’s eyes flickered back and forth. “Please don’t make a scene.”
“You’re the one making a scene!” I barked.
He grabbed me by the arm and tried to pull me aside, but I wrenched myself out of his grip. “In case you forgot, we’re not together anymore, so don’t touch me.”
Irritation flashed across his expression. “Fine. Let’s just… have this conversation somewhere else.”
I trudged behind him to the parking lot, where he probably thought I was far enough away from civilized people so I could shout at him in peace.
I crossed my arms. “You still haven’t explained why you’re here. Why did Clark send you after me?”
Gerrett made a sour face—one that I was used to seeing in the tail end of our relationship.
